Help! How do I start finding my purpose outside of the home?

Dear Happiness Coach,

I’m a stay at home mom and my kids are starting to be more independent. I would like to start doing some type of work outside of the house but I have no idea what it would be. Also, I feel like I still need to be home for driving, chaperoning, homework help, etc. When will it get to be more about what I need?

WANTING MORE

Dear Wanting More,

I hear you! Parenting is a hard job and it never ends. However, that doesn’t mean that your role doesn’t change. You’re smart to be honest with yourself about how much time you realistically want to be away from home right now.

First, I would recommend getting really clear on why you want outside work. Understanding your ‘why’ becomes your motivation and can spare you a lot of unnecessary pain! For example, is it about bringing in income, finding something outside of the home that gives you purpose, or socializing with other adults? Answers to each one of these questions could lead you in a different direction.

It’s also helpful to know your parameters — are you looking for part or full time work, virtual, hybrid or fully in-person? What are the home responsibilities such as grocery shopping, driving, pet care, etc. that you will need to hire out or re-negotiate with other members of your family once you start working?

Exploring how you feel and what it means to you is the first step in figuring out what you want. Another part of the exploration phase is talking to various people to find out what work they do and how they got involved with it. Sharing your goals and getting curious about them is a huge step toward accomplishing them.
