Doing it the bird's way

How well are you trusting your mother’s instincts?

There’s a mother robin who has been very busy in the holly bush by our front porch.

Among the thorny branches lies a perfect little nest with two tiny blue eggs. The mother bird has made the inside just the right shape, choosing to smooth it with the softest of straw, making it the perfect place for her eggs to rest. She picked stronger twigs for the outside of the nest, making it the just the right place for her to perch over her babies when the time comes. She even used a twist tie she found from the rose bush!

The thorns from the holly bush work to keep away any predators or unsuspecting humans.

It's amazing that she knew how to build such a nest for her babies. She relied on her instincts, didn’t question them and got to work.

As a mother it can be easy to fall into the trap of questioning yourself or what’s best for your children.

Like our mother bird you just know.

Trust your instincts.

Listen to your intuition.

You know your children and your life situation better than anybody else.

Just like our mother bird you know how to love and nurture your children and give them what they need.

Do the best with what you have.

I can hear a bird friend saying to our robin “You’re using a twist tie in your nest? That’s never been done before. Aren’t you afraid it will hurt your babies?” But she knows what’s best and she used what was available at the time. She got the job done and used the resources that were available.

Be patient with yourself.

I'm sure it took her a long time to make that nest. Maybe she started, messed up and had to start over.

Every day I check the nest, waiting for the day when I see two little baby birds.

Our mother bird will be right there knowing exactly what to feed her babies for dinner. Now that's something I wish I knew!

Have a very happy Mother’s Day!

Trust yourself.

You are enough.

You are loved.
